EPIC efficiency tips and tricks (or “to do list” for all providers)
Chart review
- preview in chart side bar (know how to “pin” if necessary)- create filters in chart review
- set priority and use overview on problem list for quick pre-visit review
- use assessment plan note for chronic issues and then click “View All Notes” later to see all of these notes by problem
- keep problem list prioritized and with active “overview” for easy chart review prior to seeing patient
Documentation
- write orders and notes in rooms
- Use CTRL + SHIFT hotkeys to rapidly jump between Visit Navigator activity sections
- use smartphrases
> use smart phrases to pull labs and vital signs into note
In Basket
- create quick actions in in basket folders
- select order of in basket folders
- handle most messages from within in basket (without going into chart review)
- if you open it, finish it
- for chronic pain patients, keep relevant information in problem list so refill can be processed without going into chart
Orders
- save/categorize preferences: multiple configurations same med / lab
- show “taking” “chronic” “change/reorder” on med list
- mark meds as “chronic” so they don’t fall off list
- put DC reason for easy review of why a med was stopped (if clinically relevant)
- write orders under problem
- In the Meds and Orders activity section, set preferred display as "Associated Dx" to list the meds and orders by Visit Dx.
Navigating
- use keyboard shortcuts in navigation
- Try widescreen view to have Problem List, Meds and Orders, and Sidebar all on a single screenview in 3 columns
